Lusaka’s Diplomat corps toasts Pope Francis |
During a reception in honour of the election of Pope Francis held at the Apostolic Nunciature, in Lusaka on Friday evening, 10 May 2013, the Apostolic Nuncio (Vatican Ambassador) to Zambia and Malawi, Archbishop Julio Murat said the new Pope had expressed a desire to continue on the road of dialogue. "No real bridges among men and women can be built without God. It is the Holy See's mandate to give voice to the conscience of person and to encourage people of goodwill to do their utmost for the good of the human person." Archbishop Murat said.

In recent times, we saw Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI take to tweeter and other modern technologies to communicate with the wider world. It was therefore interesting that when it came to the election of the new Pope, the Vatican decided to stay with the centuries-old tradition of twirling smoke and bells to signify the election of a new Pope. And so the white smoke came and the words "Habemus papam" (we have a Pope) resounded round the world on 13 March 2013: Pope Francis was elected!
