The Catholic National Health Department is an administrative organ of the Zambia Episcopal Conference whose principal function is to carry out the aims and objectives of the ZEC for health. It is responsible for linking up Catholic Dioceses, parishes and communities in regard to coordination, policy issues, and development of community based health and related programs. The Health Department was established in 1996 and operated as a desk up to February 2005 when the Bishops elevated its status to a department. One of the reasons for elevating the desk to a department was to make the response by the Catholic Church to HIV/AIDS and health issues more effective and coordinated.
The Health Department of the Zambia Episcopal Conference operates at two levels: First as a National Health Institutions and on another level dealing with Community Home Based Care Programmes. ZEC National Health Department coordinates activities in seventeen (17) Hospitals, thirty seven (37) Health Centers, three (3) Nursing Schools, ten (10) Hospices and 220 Community Home Based Care programmes. These institutions and programmes are spread all over in the 10 Catholic Dioceses of the nine provinces of Zambia.

The Health Department  runs Cardinal Adam Memorial Hospital on behalf of the Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC).
