Joseph Cardinal Mazombwe
A Foundation to celebrate and promote what late Joseph Cardinal Mazombwe stood for has been formed and registered in Zambia.

Foundation Chairperson Brigadier General Emeldah Chola has announced the development in Lusaka.

Speaking at the grave site of Joseph Cardinal Mazombwe in the Cathedral of Child Jesus grounds in Lusaka, at the launch of Joseph Cardinal Mazombwe week, Brigadier General Chola said the Foundation to be Called Joseph Cardinal Mazombwe will promote what Cardinal Mazombwe stood for.

“Cardinal Mazombwe was a man who stood for the poor in society. He embarked on a number of projects such as the building of the Cathedral and the Catholic University. So this foundation which initially was called Friends of Cardinal Mazombwe will endeavour to promote what he stood for,” General Chola said.

Meanwhile, Joseph Cardinal Mazombwe Foundation has launched Cardinal Mazombwe week.

The 7 days which started with a short prayer service at the grave site of Joseph Cardinal Mazombwe, will culminate into the donation of assorted goods to Hospices and Cardinal Adam Memorial Hospital in Lusaka, ending with a special mass on Sunday 28th August 2016 at Kapingila House.

And speaking in his reflection during the prayer service at the grave site of Joseph Cardinal Mazombwe, Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) Secretary General Father Cleophas Lungu said Cardinal Mazombwe was a man of great faith that ran his race.

Making reference to the scripture reading taken from the book of 2 Timothy 4:7, Father Lungu added that Cardinal Mazombwe was a champion who ran his race victoriously.

“Cardinal Mazombwe could be compared to an Athlete; he ran his race and was crowned with a golden medal. He was a champion of faith and justice for the poor, a merciful man and very compassion for the less privileged,” Father Lungu said.

Father Lungu added that the building of the Cathedral of Child Jesus in Lusaka is testimony of his fight for noble cause.

“He never gave up, even when it was difficult, and the result is the Cathedral of Child Jesus,” Father Lungu said.

Joseph Cardinal Mazombwe was the first indigenous Zambian Cardinal.

He was born on 31st September, 1931 and died on 29th August, 2013.
