Over three million, mostly young people, attended the Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana beach Mass by Pope Francis, yesterday, Sunday 29 July 2013.
The famous beach of Copacabana was completely covered by the massive throng of people. Zambia sent 53 young delegates to this year’s World Youth day which was themed “Go and make disciples of all peoples" as stated in the gospel of Matthew 28:19.
Brazil is known to have the world’s largest Catholic population.
During the homily, the Holy Father, Pope Francis encouraged the young people to go back home in the manner of commissioned disciples, full of energy to go and change the world. He told them: “The Church needs you. Your enthusiasm, your creativity and the happiness that characterises you.”
The Brazil World Youth Day Mass was colourful and unique: Bishops and Cardinals joined the youth in dancing to the rhythmic melodies at the Mass.
Meanwhile, the youth, from Zambia have all arrived home safe.
